IATA

IATA is an international umbrella organization of airlines involved in passenger and air cargo transportation. The abbreviation IATA stands for International Air Transport Association. The organization was founded in 1945 in Havana, Cuba and is now based in Montreal, Canada. IATA has offices in various regions of the world.

One of the diverse tasks of IATA concerns the unification and standardization of processes in air freight traffic. In order for the transport of goods by plane to function smoothly across borders, standardized freight documents and internationally understandable abbreviations and codes are required. The IATA pursues the goal of standardizing all handling steps in air freight traffic in order to guarantee cost savings and the greatest possible processing efficiency for its members. Another key task in this context is the definition of security standards and the monitoring of their compliance by the members.

For example, the DGR for the air transport of dangerous goods are published by the association.

The activity of the association is not only in the interest of the member companies, but ultimately also of the air freight customers themselves. You can be sure that the transport of your goods will work according to the same rules worldwide. For a long time, the umbrella organization was also responsible for price and service agreements in international air traffic. With the global liberalization of air traffic, this original core function has ceased to exist. Such agreements are no longer permissible under international competition law.
