Demurrage

In shipping, demurrage is a mooring fee that is incurred when agreed loading or unloading times are exceeded. The fee is agreed between the customer (exporter, importer) and the carrier (shipowner, charterer). The corresponding document for this is the so-called charter party, a document of proof for the sea freight contract, which can be requested from each contractual partner when agreeing on freight transport.
In the event of delay, the demurrage will be paid by the charterer to the carrier if there are circumstances for which he is responsible. The counterpart to demurrage is despatch or detention. It is paid if the loading or unloading is carried out faster than agreed.
